Distant Lake-Stars

July 14, 2001

The lakeside world was silent dark
Stars tangled in the clouds
A ride of mountain pines stood up
Like hair on a dogs back
The lake, still as glass
Could not reflect the distant stars
Despite their brilliance
Scent of pine on the gentle breeze
Gasping for breath in the mountain air
The summer cold a welcome chill
The dark, welcome disguise
The lake at night is only black
No emerald, no sapphire to see
Yet I do not grieve
Not tonight
Embrace the stars for they are
My jewels -- my diamonds
Even when they are too far
To reach tonight
