Mercutio

September 29, 2001

I walked the line
twixt Montague and Capulet
I never chose between
And as I die, I die for love,
I curse you equally.

Romeo’s fool I always was
My quick wit wasted to coax a smile
From red lips that whispered
Words of love, though none for me.
Did you not see?

Was it a vain sacrifice?
My life entire given to please
To help you salve your soul --
My life taken by the thrust of a sword
Meant for you

I am not selfless now
I die in anger, with angry words
For both Montague and Capulet
Have laid me low and now I see
Love is wasted, I die selfishly.
