A Promise of Hope

December 7, 2001

Slate colored sky foretelling winter
An oracle no one wants to believe
Snow heavy winds whisper of my sins
This is a season in which I grieve

I’m shaking with cold as if I’ve never felt it
When in truth I have been cold for years
Breathing in despair as if I’ve never smelled it
Turning to stare at the face of my fears

Christmas blues, never red and green
Needles falling from my pine
A loneliness so sharp and keen
This bitter fruit was always mine

And then you rise like Bethlehem’s star
Cover me in glittering light
Melt the snow and warm my heart
And free me from my endless night

A new love is a precious flower
So cautiously I guard the bloom
Emotion has enormous power
To save my soul or seal my doom

Winter dies, and I live
Resurrected by your kiss
I offer all I have to give
Spring’s here; the snow I will not miss.
